José Antonio Fichtner is Brazilian, married, the father of three sons, domiciled in Brazil and resident in Brazil and Portugal. He holds an LL.B. from PUC/RJ (Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro) and an LL.M. from the University of Chicago. Founding partner of the law firm Andrade & Fichtner Advogados. Arbitrator and Mediator, listed before the main arbitral institutions in Brazil. Lecturer and author of books in the practice areas of Arbitration, Civil Procedure and Electoral Law. Lawyer, with offices in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília. Vast experience in significant corporate and contractual judicial and arbitral disputes, in Brazil and abroad, especially in the fields of construction, infrastructure, energy, oil & gas, insurance and telecommunications, as well as in the sphere of public-private partnerships. He has great knowledge of public and private law, having acted as Attorney for the State of Rio de Janeiro for 16 years. José Antonio was a Justice before the Regional Federal Court for Election Matters between 1994 and 1998. He has ample experience as a professor, in institutions such as PUC/RJ (Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro), FGV (Getúlio Vargas Foundation) and EMERJ (School for Judges of the State of Rio de Janeiro). He is consistently ranked among the best lawyers in arbitration and litigation before state courts by the most renowned international publications, having been listed as #1 by Chambers & Partners Global and Latin America (published in England) and The Legal 500 (published in the United States). He was recognized by Global Chambers as one of the top 20 Latin American specialists in arbitration. José Antonio was also a member of the commission that drafted the new Brazilian Arbitration and Mediation Acts and is the coordinator of FGV’s LL.M. in Litigation; the only master’s degree in Brazil dedicated solely to judicial and arbitral disputes.
